The Morgan Dollar was minted intermittedly through out the 63 year period, 1878 - 1904 and 1921. The coin contained 90% silver and 10% copper, weighed 26.73g and measured 31.8 in Diameter. The coins contain mint marks (CC- Carson City, S- San Francisco, O- New Orleans and D- Denver) except for the Philidelphia.

The Morgan Dollar had its seed intially sown in 1876 when Henry Richard Linderman set about to redesign america's silver coins. For assistance he contacted the London Mint's C.W. Freemantle who recommended his assistant engraver, Mr George Morgan for the post. Morgan accepted the position for a six month trial and set about his task with some rigourous reseach, studying the bald eagle for the reverse and being introduced to Anne Willes Williams as the head.

Morgan wanted to use the head of an American Woman instead of the usual depiction of a Greek style. The first coins were struck in Philidelphia. The Pitman Act saw the demise of the Morgan in 1904, which instructed 350,000,000 ounces to be melted. Only 270,000,000 was melted of which 259,000,000 ounces was sold to the UK for $1 per ounce.

In 1921 the Morgan made a come back for only one year, being struck in Devner City. However the lack of dies available meant Morgan had to produce a new design, plus the new Peace Dollar began to gain traction after the 1st World War meant the demand for the Morgan Silver Dollar ceased.
