The Buffalo has been one of the most iconic designs produced and was recently reproduced as the American Buffalo 1oz .9999 gold coin with a face value of $50. Originally a 5 cent copper/nickel based coin which circulated from 1913 - 1938 and was designed by James Earle Fraser.
The 5 cent nickle was part of the early 20th Century makeover of the Amercian coinage and James Earle Fraser was commissioned to create this design. Fraser was intially instructed to produce a new image for the Lincoln cent by the new US Mint Director Abram Andrew, which never came to fruition, however Frasers enthusiasm eventually led to the adoption of the buffalo 5 cent coin in 1912.
The coin was made of 75% copper 25% nickel and measured 21.21mm and weighed 5grams.
