Peace

The Peace Dollar had a very emotive link to history and was in circulation from 1921 - 1928 and again in 1934 and 1935. It was a design by Anthony De Francisci who won a competition to produce an image depicting Peace following the 1st World War. The Peace Dollar out manoeuvered the Morgan Silver Dollar into retirement and remained the last Dollar to be stuck in silver by 1935.

The Pitman Act in 1918 required millions new silver coins to be struck and the Morgan Dollar was at the forefront of this production. However there was pressure for a new coin by numismatics of the era and whilst coming up against a brick wall in the US Congress, they had the ear of leading politicians and the Peace Dollar was passed by Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon in 1921.

During the 1st World War the Germans were speading rumours the British governemt had run out of silver and they could not redeem for silver for paper currency. The price of silver began to increase and the Pitman Act allowed the 350 million of Silver Dollars to be produced and from this 270 million Dollars were purchased for $1 each including the copper alloy. This helped the UK government to sell the price of silver down.
